A Northumberland County man has been sentenced to a decade in prison for the fatal shooting of a man near his home in Virginia’s Northern Neck.
Bobby Ray Landman III pleaded guilty on October 22 to charges of voluntary manslaughter and reckless handling of a firearm. He received a total sentence of 15 years, with five years suspended by the judge.
Initially indicted on a second-degree murder charge, Landman’s charge was amended as part of a plea agreement. He will be subject to supervised probation upon his release.
The incident occurred on the night of March 29 in the 700 block of Cedar Point Road, where Landman shot 41-year-old Seth Dutton. Despite first responders’ attempts to revive Dutton, he was pronounced dead at the scene before he could be transported to a hospital.
Investigators revealed that the shooting resulted from a dispute over a laser pointer, leading to Landman’s arrest at the scene. Dutton’s death shocked his friends and neighbors, who remembered him as a fun-loving outdoorsman and dedicated family man.
