Maryland residents have reported unsettling experiences with electronic voting machines, claiming that their votes for Vice President Kamala Harris were altered to reflect support for other candidates. The incidents have raised concerns about the reliability of the voting process.
Thedosia Munford, a voter in Prince George’s County, shared her experience with WUSA9, expressing her fear and confusion when she noticed that her selection for Harris had unexpectedly changed to Jill Stein while voting at the Southern Regional Technology and Recreation Complex in Fort Washington. “I double-checked before I moved to the next screen,” Munford recounted, explaining that she was able to correct her ballot but felt shaken by the ordeal. After reporting the issue, she learned from an election judge that another voter had experienced a similar problem.
Another local resident, John Butler, echoed Munford’s concerns on Facebook, stating that his vote for Harris was also changed just before he submitted his ballot at a polling location in Suitland.
In response to these reports, Jared DeMarinis from the Maryland Board of Elections reassured voters that all machines are rigorously tested and deemed safe. He emphasized the importance of reviewing ballots before submission, noting, “That’s the point of touch screen. You have to review your ballot before it comes out. And you can review it again before you scan. If there is a mistake, you can ask for a spoiled ballot and redo it.”
Despite these assurances, Munford remains apprehensive about the situation, questioning how many voters actually check their ballots before submitting them. “That’s the message that has to go out,” she said. “You have to check your ballot before you submit it into the machine.”
