Double Lung Transplant Leads West Virginia Woman to Marry Organ Donor’s Brother
A West Virginia woman, Jennifer, who received a life-saving double lung transplant, never imagined the surgery would also lead her to her future husband. The Cleveland Clinic recently shared Jennifer’s heartwarming story, which began with her meeting the brother of her organ donor, Travis, and eventually blossomed into a love story.
Jennifer was born with a rare genetic condition known as situs inversus, where the organs in the chest and abdomen develop in a reversed position. This condition often leads to recurring respiratory infections, and by 2015, Jennifer, a former Ms. West Virginia, noticed her health deteriorating to the point where she needed oxygen therapy to breathe.
In 2018, her condition worsened, leading her to be hospitalized for 10 out of 12 months. Her doctor referred her to the Cleveland Clinic, where she received a double lung transplant that saved her life.
After the surgery, Jennifer received a message from the family of her donor, Jill Ellis. Jill’s family traveled from Wisconsin to meet Jennifer in West Virginia, and it was during this visit that she met Travis, Jill’s brother. The two kept in touch, grew closer, and in July 2023, Travis proposed. The couple tied the knot in September 2024.
Jennifer, now with her new lungs, is dedicated to living life to the fullest and raising awareness about the importance of organ donation. She is grateful for her donor, Jill, and the lives she saved through organ donation.
“Jill saved six lives by becoming an organ donor. That to me makes her a hero, and who wouldn’t want to do that? What better way to have your legacy live on?” Jennifer said.
Jennifer’s story is a testament to the life-saving power of organ donation, as well as the unexpected joys it can bring.
