As millions of Californians hit the roads for Thanksgiving, the California Highway Patrol (CHP) is stepping up its safety efforts. From 6:01 p.m. on Wednesday, November 27, to 11:59 p.m. on Sunday, December 1, the CHP will launch its annual Thanksgiving Maximum Enforcement Period (MEP).
During this time, officers across the state will be on patrol, prioritizing seat belt enforcement and promoting safe driving habits. “Thanksgiving is a time for family and togetherness, and our mission is to ensure everyone reaches their destination safely,” said CHP Commissioner Sean Duryee. He urged drivers to prepare their vehicles ahead of time, leave early, wear seat belts, and avoid impaired driving.
Last year, the MEP resulted in 1,047 DUI arrests and 27 fatal crashes, with five victims found not wearing seat belts. The CHP reminds drivers to stay sober, avoid distractions, and prioritize safety on the roads this holiday season.
