Governor Gavin Newsom has announced a $24.7 million funding boost to support California’s workforce development, awarding grants to 65 apprenticeship programs across key sectors, including healthcare, transportation, education, and advanced manufacturing. The initiative aims to support 8,270 apprentices, with an average wage of nearly $32 per hour.
This funding marks the second round of the state’s Apprenticeship Innovation Funding program, which is designed to provide earn-and-learn opportunities to address workforce needs and prepare residents for high-paying jobs. Newsom underscored the importance of these programs in equipping Californians with the skills needed for today’s job market.
California currently leads the nation with 190,915 registered apprenticeships, and with this new funding, the state is on track to reach its goal of 500,000 apprentices by 2029. The Governor also pointed to the upcoming $120 million “California Jobs First Economic Blueprint,” which will focus on driving job creation and economic growth throughout the state over the next decade.
