A powerful cold front continues to grip the western United States, bringing snow, freezing rain, and plummeting temperatures to several states. Winter weather warnings and advisories are active across Washington, Montana, Idaho, Oregon, Wyoming, Utah, and New Mexico. With challenging conditions persisting into the weekend, residents and travelers are urged to exercise caution.
Washington
Four winter storm warnings are in effect, with snow accumulations of up to 24 inches expected in Washington Pass and the Cascade Range through November 18. The Northwest Blue Mountains may see between 10 and 13 inches of snow.
The National Weather Service (NWS) advises against non-essential travel and recommends carrying a winter storm kit with tire chains, a flashlight, blankets, extra clothing, water, and a first-aid kit.
Montana
In Montana, snow will impact both the southwest and areas near the Canadian border.
- Northeast Montana: Counties including Daniels, McCone, Sheridan, and Roosevelt could see 1 to 3 inches of snow, leading to slick and hazardous road conditions.
- Southwest Montana: Higher elevations in Beaverhead, Madison, Gallatin, and Jefferson counties are forecast to receive 1 to 4 inches of snow.
Idaho
South Central Idaho will see snowfall similar to Montana, with 1 to 4 inches expected at lower elevations and greater amounts in mountainous regions.
A winter storm warning is active for sections of the Rocky Mountains, including Fourth of July Pass, Dobson Pass, and Lookout Pass, where up to 18 inches of snow is anticipated through Monday evening.
Wyoming
In Wyoming, parts of Teton, Sublette, and Lincoln counties are under a winter weather advisory. Mountain passes may accumulate 4 to 6 inches of snow, with higher elevations above 10,000 feet receiving up to 8 inches.
Oregon
A winter storm warning has been issued for the Northern Blue Mountains, where 10 to 13 inches of snow are expected. The NWS notes that a brief warm front could turn snow into rain on Sunday in some areas, but a cold front will bring significant snowfall later in the day, affecting the Oregon Cascades.
Utah
Two winter weather advisories are in effect:
- Wasatch Mountains: Forecasts call for 6 to 12 inches of snow until Saturday afternoon.
- Western Uinta Mountains: Snowfall totals of 4 to 8 inches are expected.
Motorists should reduce speeds and drive cautiously on snow-covered roads.
New Mexico
By Sunday, up to 6 inches of snow could blanket areas above 7,500 feet, including the Sacramento Mountains, Southern Gila Region Highlands, and Black Range. The NWS warns that roads, bridges, and overpasses will likely become slippery, potentially disrupting Monday morning commutes. Gusty winds could exacerbate hazards by knocking down tree branches.
Travel Recommendations
With snow continuing across the western U.S., residents and travelers should stay updated on local forecasts, avoid unnecessary trips, and ensure vehicles are equipped for winter conditions.
