11 Infections and 1 Death Linked to Listeria in Recalled Ready-to-Eat Meat Products

A recall of ready-to-eat meat and poultry products from Yu Shang Food, Inc. has been linked to a deadly listeria outbreak, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The recall, which affects more than 4,500 pounds of products sold nationwide and online, was issued after routine testing revealed potential contamination with Listeria monocytogenes.

The recall was initiated on October 21 after testing conducted by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) discovered the contamination. As of Friday, the CDC reported that 11 people in four states have been infected with listeria. Of these, nine have been hospitalized, and one person has tragically died.

The states most affected by the outbreak include California, where seven cases have been reported. Illinois has seen two cases, while New York and New Jersey each have reported one case.

Symptoms of Listeriosis

Listeriosis, caused by the bacteria Listeria monocytogenes, is a serious foodborne illness that can be especially dangerous for older adults, pregnant individuals, and those with weakened immune systems. Symptoms of listeriosis include:

  • Fever
  • Muscle aches
  • Headache
  • Stiff neck
  • Confusion
  • Loss of balance
  • Convulsions
  • Diarrhea and other gastrointestinal symptoms
  • For pregnant individuals: miscarriage, stillbirth, or life-threatening infections in newborns
  • In severe cases: death

The USDA advises individuals who are at higher risk for listeriosis and who experience flu-like symptoms within two months of eating contaminated food to seek medical care immediately. Those affected should inform their healthcare provider about their potential exposure to contaminated products.

Consumers who may have purchased the affected products are urged to check the recall notice and avoid consuming them to prevent the risk of infection.
