Viral social media posts and stories claiming that taxpayers in certain states will receive a $2,000 (or more) government stimulus check as the holiday season approaches are making the rounds again. These rumors have resurfaced multiple times over the past year and have gained more attention following Donald Trump’s election as the 47th president of the United States.
So, will government stimulus checks be issued in 2024 or 2025?
A quick visit to the official Internal Revenue Service (IRS) website shows that no new economic stimulus payments are planned. The IRS distributed three rounds of stimulus checks during the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic, with the final payment issued nearly three years ago.
According to the IRS, “The IRS has issued all first, second, and third Economic Impact Payments. You can no longer use the Get My Payment application to check your payment status.”
While most people who were eligible for the stimulus payments have already received them, those who missed a payment still have the option to claim it on their tax return. The Recovery Rebate Credit is available for individuals who missed one or more rounds of Economic Impact Payments. The deadline to file a return for the 2020 credit has already passed, but individuals can still claim the 2021 credit by filing a return before April 15, 2025.
