SSDI Update: 2025 COLA Increase, Payment Dates, and Amounts for U.S. Recipients
Disability recipients in the United States will receive their Social Security payments on October 9, 16, or 23. Some individuals may have already received their monthly SSDI check or direct deposit on October 3, meaning their next payment will arrive on November 1, 2024.
Payment Schedule for October
To qualify for the SSDI payment scheduled for October 9, which can be as much as $3,822, recipients must have been born between the 1st and the 10th of any month. It’s important to note that SSDI payments are exclusively for those who have applied for and received approval. If you are also receiving Supplemental Security Income (SSI), you will not qualify for the payments issued on Wednesdays in October.
Payments After October 9
The remaining SSDI payments for October will not apply to those who began collecting Social Security benefits before May 1997. Recipients eligible for the October 16 payment must have been born between the 11th and the 20th of any month. For those born after the 20th, the next Disability Insurance payment will be issued on October 23, provided they did not qualify for the payment on October 3.
Payment Amounts
SSDI recipients could receive a maximum payment of up to $3,822. However, most recipients can expect an average payment of around $1,539, depending on factors such as work history, earnings, and filing age.
2025 COLA Update
On October 10, Social Security Disability Insurance recipients can anticipate learning about the 2025 Cost-of-Living Adjustment (COLA). This announcement will come from the Bureau of Labor Statistics when they release the Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers (CPI-W) for September.
The Social Security Administration (SSA) will use this inflation figure to calculate the 2025 COLA increase for Social Security retirement, SSDI, and SSI benefits. However, SSDI recipients will not see this increase reflected in their payments until January 2025.
Current projections from the Senior Citizens League estimate that the COLA will be about 2.5%, which is lower than the increases seen in 2024, 2023, and even 2022. For example, an SSDI payment of $1,000 in 2024 would increase to $1,025 in 2025.
